Rising Sun, IN – Looking for an extreme thrill in the great outdoors? Well, look no further. Rising Sun, Indiana, is now home to the new Dagaz Acres Leadership Center and Zip-line Adventure Course.

The first of its kind in the tri-state, Dagaz Acres’ state-of-the-art zip-line and challenge course offers an eco-adventure along with an adrenaline rush for both novice and master “zippers” alike.

A zip-line consists of a pulley suspended on a cable mounted on an incline. They are designed to enable a user propelled by gravity to traverse from the top to the bottom of the inclined cable, usually made of stainless steel, by holding on or attaching to the freely moving pulley. At Dagaz Acres, the zip-lines traverse from trees to platforms to other trees, zipping through the air at up to 35 miles an hour on the area’s first enviro-thrill ride.

The adventure at Dagaz Acres begins with a climb to the treetops of Southeastern Indiana and continues over scenic valleys and ravines in a way you’ve never experienced before. Strapped safely in a secure body harness, you’ll soar high above the forest floor. The adventure course* includes:

• Five dual zip-lines covering ½ mile on 23 acres
• Two canopy zip-lines and a Burma Bridge
• Multi-element high ropes challenge course
• Comfortable and secure ½ body swing harness
*The Zip-line Adventure Course is for adventurers 60 to 250 pounds. Participants must weigh a minimum of 60 pounds and be 10 years old for zip-lines.

Dagaz Acres’ Zip-line Adventure Course was professionally designed and built by Cornerstone Designs, Inc. of Pineola, NC, a leader in building ropes courses and canopy tours. Both Cornerstone Designs and Dagaz Acres are members of the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT – www.acctinfo.org).

According to Cornerstone Designs Owner Jim Wall, the Dagaz Acres Zipline Adventure Course is an eco-adventure unlike most others. “A lot of (courses) are not all in canopies (i.e.: trees). A lot are on fields or towers. The unique part of Dagaz Acres is they are using the beautiful terrain to develop a system among the trees where you are able to go from station to station underneath the canopy or see the wildlife underneath the canopy and be up close to the trees.”

While zip-line use by the general public is not new – civilian ropes courses have been in the U.S. since the 1970s and used by the military prior to that – the high thrill-to-skill ratio has created a modest global boom of zip-lines, said Steve Gustafson, president of the Professional Ropes Course Association (www.prcainfo.org) and owner of Experienced-Based Learning in Illinois (www.eblcanopytours.com).

“It’s less about physical ability and more about doing something fun for the first time in your life. It’s exhilarating,” he said.

Owners Patrick and Lori Noonan share their reason for building Dagaz Acres: “Our love for the outdoors and a strong background in educating and motivating people to action inspired our family to start a business that offers an exhilarating outdoor adventure – an adventure that allows our guests to let go of their daily stress and commune with nature. Whether alone or with a group of friends, you’ll return to the ‘real’ world with fresh perspectives and incentives.

Dagaz Acres staff is licensed and accredited with over 20 years experience in team building and personal development. Founder Patrick Noonan is a specialist in corporate training and carries that expertise and love for all things outdoors to the adventure course every day. The staff ensures each participant’s safety, excitement and personal growth!

Nearly three years have passed since a Rural Entrepreneurial Support grant from the Indiana Office of Community & Rural Affairs (OCRA) helped Rising Sun, Indiana, establish itself as a blossoming artists’ colony. During the 18 month program, 150 students attended the Rising Sun Art Academy, an “artist in residence” program was launched in the local school to provide resources for art enrichment in the classroom, and over 300 adult learners from throughout the nation attended workshops lead by local instructors and national figures such as Eric Maisel and Becky Anderson.

What’s even more impressive is that the programs started by the grant are continuing 18 months after the OCRA grant cycle ended.

Entering its second year following the conclusion of the grant, the Rising Sun / Ohio County Tourism Commission has secured additional funding to continue the youth and school programs started by the initial OCRA grant. Professional development workshops, 10 of which have been held in the past 18 months, have become nationally renowned and self-sustaining. “With the exception of a nominal level of promotional support from Tourism, these programs have become self-sustaining,” explains Sherry Timms, Executive Director of the Tourism Commission.

What has helped Rising Sun to develop and promote its programs has been its use of Web 2.0 technologies. A dedicated website, http://www.artsinrisingsun.com, was launched to provide broader access to the content of the training programs and seminars offered over the course of the OCRA grant program. In the year after the site was launched, it logged nearly 6400 visitors, of which over 1100 accessed videos and PDFs of the seminars and workshops. “What we were trying to do was make it possible to extend the benefits of the OCRA grant indefinitely,” explains Brett Stowell, Project Manager for the web initiative at Bretzel Enterprises. “It seemed to us that we could help artists everywhere and build the brand equity of Rising Sun at the same time by sharing our materials with the greater community of artists.”

“Now we are engaging in a number of web marketing initiatives,” explains Timms. So far results have been favorable. Nearly as many event registrations were received from email marketing as by direct mail for the 2009 fall workshop series. “The only difference,” explains Stowell, “is that a registration from a direct mail campaign costs our customer over eight times what a registration from a web campaign costs.” Once the response data is mined and direct mail lists optimized, Stowell expects the artist development programs to be completely self-sufficient. “We started the first artist development program in Southeastern Indiana, and we are excited that three years in it is nearly self-sufficient” notes Timms.

Story and Photos by Kendal R. Miller

Equipped with a map, a full tank of gas and both a love and curiosity for the arts, I ventured out on a journey that exposed me to the winding roads and scenic views of both Switzerland and Ohio counties in rural Southeast Indiana.

It wasn’t just one location that I was in search of —it was over 30—and it was going to take the entire weekend to complete my mission. There was plenty to see and nearly 40 artists to meet. I was on a personal pursuit to visit every location listed on last year’s inaugural edition of the Creative Spaces Rural Places Art Tour map. This year’s bi-county event takes place on April 24-25 2010 from 10:00am-6:00pm.

The free art tour took me along the Ohio River Scenic Byway and to galleries and businesses located in the downtown shopping districts of Vevay and Rising Sun, and through the rural towns of Patriot, Florence, Fairview and Lamb. I ventured onto second floors of town buildings, meandered in artist’s kitchens and living rooms and explored home studios and garages.

There were rooms of colorful supplies, exclusive aromas of various art materials and unusual components unique to each artist’s specialty. I noted both customary and unique tools and instruments abound including storage containers filled with artists’ materials, books and drawings.

The artists were as individual as their creations, sharing not only their techniques and accomplishments but a bit of what inspired them and what life as an artist is like. Throughout the tour I became more than a casual observer, feeling more like a student or next door neighbor who dropped by to see what was new.

Along the way I met some incredibly talented individuals who worked in mediums including colored pencil, photography, sculpture and ceramics, pottery, stained glass, jewelry, needlework, oil and acrylics, watercolor, jewelry, American crafts, fiber, steel and wood, pen and ink and instrument design.

Beginning my trip in Switzerland County I drove to Lamb and visited an artist who specialized in wood sculptures and paintings, watching as he used saws to create his next masterpiece. Down the road I observed artist Vickie Althoff creating her dried floral creations and checked out Debbie Reisenback’s hand-crafted jewelry and painted signs outside Stonehouse Creations—a historic location that holds as many stories as the artists and guests that I met there that day.

In downtown Vevay, business and studios housed several photographers and woodworkers, sculptors working in clay, metal and fabric and painters working in oil and acrylic.

Tony Catanzaro from Tony’s Gallery on Liberty Street creates life-sized metal sculptures and tables in his studio alongside his historic home. Not only did he welcome guests to enjoy his outdoor sculpture garden but to sit a spell and enjoy a cool beverage and engaging conversation. Working in her studio that overlooks the downtown district, Meredith Luhr of Luhr’s Studio & Fine Art Gallery explained her sculpture technique and later invited guests to join her for a glass of wine at her outdoor sitting space.

Day two I headed to Ohio County to visit artists located in home studios, galleries and businesses in and around downtown Rising Sun.

Artist Jan West of Jan West Studio gave me the grand tour of her home studio and a glimpse at the creations that graced both her front and back yards—a macramé donkey and a near life-sized chess set constructed out of clay pots. She explained that her previous profession was a stressful one and that she could now relax and spend her time creating her art.

Working artists in pottery, stained and fused glass, oil, colored pencil and jewelry were found at the Pendleton Art Center along Main Street in downtown Rising Sun and at individual galleries nearby.

Luthiers and musicians William Rees and eldest son Bryant at Harps on Main were busy working on a handcrafted harp that would eventually be purchased locally or through its customer base that spans not only Midwest outlets but international ones as well.

Perhaps one thing I didn’t figure on was how far off the beaten path I would venture—the exact location I found artist Jim Day. “Over the river and through the woods” came to mind as I crossed a drivable stream and drove up into the woods to Talon Wildlife Creations. It was well worth the trip.

Specializing in avian re-creations, Day is a world renowned re-creation artist whose designs are so life-like that they have been included in natural history museums, private collections and retail establishments such as Bass Pro Shop. His work has been featured on PBS television and has been used in several motion pictures.

If you consider yourself a bit directionally challenged (like yours truly) you need not worry. The artists’ locations were clearly marked with additional signs posted along the way. If need be, both the artists and the locals were more than happy to clarify the course along the way. Not only were the participants a tight knit group who supported and networked amongst themselves, but it didn’t take me long to find myself comparing notes with them and the other guests that I was either leading or following along the trail.

Before venturing out, a few tips will make the experience even more enjoyable. Begin early, allowing yourself to enjoy each artist at every location and dress comfortable. Bring along a little spending money for a quick bite to eat along the way and a treasure or two that that you just can’t go home without (which there will be plenty.)

The route offers a pleasant escape from suburban concerns as it passes villages, well-kept barns, vineyards, and orchards.

At Harps on Main you are welcome both to see harps being made, on a self-guided tour, and to hear the final result. William Rees has been building harps for thirty years and his move to Rising Sun has put Ohio County on the map with harp beginners and professionals alike.

Even those who think they have no musical talent will enjoy the many Celtic gift items which join the finished harps in the studio. William and his sons also build plucked psalteries. These little instruments are the connect-the-dot coloring book of the musical world – perfect for non-musicians! Relax in Harps on Main’s beautiful garden setting and listen to any of a wide array of Celtic or harp CDs.

Take one of these home and bring a little piece of your soothing day in Rising Sun with you. Harps on Main regularly hosts concerts.

I began my career as a commercial artist, studying graphic design and illustration. In 1979, I moved from Cincinnati, Ohio to Northern California and a new world of opportunity and experience opened to me. I spent 12 years working in signage, murals and large scale trade show design before opening my own business as a faux finisher.

I continue to explore multiple mediums and painting styles. I have selected oil as my medium of choice and enjoy large scale work with an impressionist feel. Color is an important aspect of my work. I often use a limited pallet to create a specific emotional atmosphere.

In 2001, I returned to the Midwest and became inspired by the landscape and wildlife subject matter native to the Ohio River Valley. Today, I live and paint in Rising Sun, Indiana where I continue to be inspired by the natural beauty.

Discover the Comfort and Courtesy of the South at Tuggles’ Folly. Located beween Rising Sun and Aurora, only 10 min. from each, and just a short drive away from I-275 and Cincinnati. Relax in our Colonial styled home. Enjoy a full Southern breakfast and browse our large private library for a favorite read. Swim in the in-ground pool, shoot a game of pool in the game room, or play a game of cards with old or new friends.

Tuggles’ Folly Bed & Breakfast, located at 9377 Holmes Hill Road is the only true Bed & Breakfast remaining in Ohio County, perched on a hilltop between Rising Sun and Aurora, Indiana with a commanding view of the Ohio River and surrounding Valley at its feet. Step out of your car to be surrounded by one of the finest views Southeastern Indiana has to offer. Walk through the front door of Tuggles’ Folly Bed & Breakfast to be surrounded by warm hospitality and tasteful presentation of eclectic antiques and personal treasures. Tuggles’ Folly is the culmination of a retirement dream for hosts Dean & Debbie Tuggle. Returning to family in Southeastern Indiana while receiving new friends and guests in their stately colonial styled, totally air-conditioned, home presents the prospect of years of enjoyment. Public rooms are replete with fascinating features and eclectic treasures. Enter the front foyer to be greeted by your first of many family antiques. A handcrafted walnut entertainment center is the focal point of the Living Room. Contents provide television, video, DVD and all types of musical preferences presented in true surround sound. Relax on sofas to the breeze of the ceiling fan in summer, or snuggle under handmade afghans next to the warmth of the stove in winter while surrounded by literary classics and Lladro sculptures.

Wake up to the aroma of your favorite coffee or hot tea brewing in the kitchen. Visit with Dean & Debbie while they prepare a full country breakfast including delectable items such as homemade biscuits & gravy, eggs to your specification, lavish fresh fruit bowl and, depending upon the season, the irresistible fried peaches. All is accomplished in the custom-built black walnut kitchen fashioned by friends and Amish craftsmen of Berne, Indiana.

Dine in Southern comfort and style in the main Dining Room or the more intimate Breakfast Room. Each provides the opportunity to visit with hosts and other guests while enjoying a leisurely breakfast reminiscent of days gone bye. No dining chair has a bad view of the hills of Kentucky to the east, or the pastures to the west where wild turkeys and deer amble by at their leisure. Look to the high ledge for a presentation of
Kentucky’s own, artist Russell May. Setting suns capture the vibrant hues of the antique stained glass complementing the Dining Room bay window.

If the need to stay in touch or check in at home/office is required, Tuggles’ Folly is connected via Wireless Internet throughout the entire facility.

Tuggles’ Folly Game Room provides guests the opportunity to while away the hours at cards, board games, pool or pinball. And then again, you can grab a favorite read from the extensive personal Library at your disposal. Retreat to a corner or a porch to prop up your feet and hear the river barge horns in the distance. The peace of the countryside will surround you.

Will you be having friends and family visiting the area soon? No place to put them? Call Dean & Debbie to provide a comfortable location. They will be taken care of well.

MAPLE ROOM – Stretch out on the Queen size sleigh bed.

OAK ROOM – Step back in time to enjoy our antique Queen size oak bedroom.

LIBRARY ROOM – Sleep in comfort in King Twin beds with private bath.
