It may come as a surprise that although small in size Ohio County is rich in history. Much of the wonderful history can be found in the museum, which is listed on the register of historic places. Originally the complex of buildings housed the Clore Plow Works beginning in 1850 and ending in 1910. Plows and other farming implements manufactured by the factory are on exhibit.
The centerpiece of the Historical Society’s collection is the world famous Hoosier Big Boy“Hoosier Boy” raceboat owned and operated by J. W. Whitlock of Rising Sun. Racing enthusiasts will be acquainted with the boat that set the speed record on the Ohio River. In 1924, Whitlock raced from Cincinnati to Louisville and back again. The round trip is 267 miles and he completed the race in 267 minutes and 49 seconds. In 19 years of racing Whitlock lost only two races. Come and see the boat and 16 of the trophies he won. Other Whitlock artifacts include an Autoharp (first coin-operated jukebox-patent sold to Wurlitzer) and several chairs made in his furniture factory.
Special exhibits include quilts, fashion, pedal cars, operating model trains, and George Winter Native American paintings. Call for dates of exhibits and programs. 812-438-4915
